The Study of Pharmacy

Even if the majority of pharmacists later work as health professionals, the study of pharmacy is a scientific study. Aspect of chemistry, physics and biology are taught in relation to drug and humans. 

The basis of the studies is the Approbationsordung für Apotheker (AApO), which defines exactly what has to be thaucht in de studies and to what extent. The standard period of study is 8 semesters, a faster study is not possible by law.

The study programm is highly structured, there is a tightly organised timetabel, as the AApO prescribes the number of hours of all subjects and certain events have to take place in the individual study sections.

The course consists of lecture, seminars and laboratory practicals. Seminars and interships are compulsory and account for two-thirds of the curriculum. Before the first state examination, students must also complete eifht weeks of clinical training, called Famulatur in a pharmacy or other pharmaceutical field during the lecture-free period. The second state examination is followed by the practical year and finally the third and last state examination.
